Jim Burns - “Gilgamesh The King”
about 27.5” x 21.25” For the 1985 Bantam US Robert Silverberg paperback. This is one of two Jim Burns cover paintings completed for this book, the other one being for the British hardcover which preceded this one (see R Ayers’ collection). This illustration was also used by the German company Heyne for their version, and it was also reused a few years later for the British hardcover for Silverberg’s TO THE LAND OF THE LIVING. For some reason, only the right side of this painting is shown in Jim’s art book LIGHTSHIP, but I’m sure glad it’s a wraparound. I drove to Boston in 2003 to pick it up from Jim when he was the GOH at the annual Boskone convention.

Where To Learn All About The History Of Ocean Diving
One of the earliest pieces of writing known to humanity is the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Babylonian legend that’s formative to the history of literature.
In it, Gilgamesh himself attaches stones to his feet, weighing him down to the bottom of the sea, so he could get the Plant of Eternal Youth. It is the first known record of someone plunging to the bottom of the sea on a breath hold dive.

The Flood Tablet, relating part of the Epic of Gilgamesh
“This, the eleventh tablet of the Epic, describes the meeting of Gilgamesh with Utnapishtim. Like Noah in the Hebrew Bible, Utnapishtim had been forewarned of a plan by the gods to send a great flood. He built a boat and loaded it with all his precious possessions, his kith and kin, domesticated and wild animals and skilled craftsmen of every kind. Utnapishtim survived the flood for six days while mankind was destroyed, before landing on a mountain called Nimush. He released a dove and a swallow but they did not find dry land to rest on, and returned. Finally a raven that he released did not return, showing that the waters must have receded. This Assyrian version of the Old Testament flood story was identified in 1872 by George Smith, an assistant in The British Museum.”
